Human rights are those minimum rights which are compulsorily obtainable by every individual as he/she is a member of the human family. The constitution of India also guarantees the equality of rights of men and women. However, in the sphere of women's human rights in India, there exists a wide gulf between theory and practice. The status of women in India has been subjected to many great changes over the past few centuries. From equal status to men in ancient times through the low points of the medieval period, to the promotion of equal rights by many reformers, the history of women in India has been eventful. In modern India, women have held high offices in India including that of the President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the Lok Sabha and Leader of the Opposition. Though women in India have been given then more rights as compared to men, even then the condition of women in India is miserable.
